What I Learned About Grocery Store Pet Food…
I always say if you aren’t growing, you are dying.
Recently, a local pet store opened up that I am really truly impressed with. As a professional pet sitter in Scottsdale, AZ I always try to keep my ear to the ground and know about what is going on in my community.
Pet Planet opened up this summer at Via Linda and 90th and Cactus and Tatum. They have over 50 stores in Canada and really understand the importance of building relationships with their community. They also believe in educating their customers on various topics and this is just one of them.
I strongly recommend you go into their store and get a nutritional consultation. They go through lots of education to learn about food and nutrients to match your pet up with the right formulas.
Here are some facts I wanted to share with you courtesy of Pet Planet:
Bi Products are NEVER good because your pet can’t digest them. Go, quick…look at your label. Does it say chicken-by-product? Ewww! Consider what you are feeding!
Soft food and treats contain chemicals to keep them soft for long periods of time! Case and point is my blog on Bil & Jac treats.
A picture of meat on the bag doesn’t mean it is in the pet food. There are almost NO REGULATIONS on pet food. Did you know that? It is even more important that you know what you are feeding!
“Natural” doesn’t necessarily mean that it is from nature. In fact most grocery store brands are NOT. Today’s typical grocery pet food diet is based on the requirements of the manufacturer, not the needs of the animal. Knowing the nature of the ingredients helps sort out some of the more outrageous claims, but what’s the truth behind all this hype? Many of these foods contain high levels of refined sugars and salt together with chemicals used as colorings and flavorings. These poor quality grocery brand foods are a major factor in the epidemic of degenerative pet diseases that are leading to early death and suffering; including cancer, arthritis and a range of allergies and auto immune diseases.
Grocery brands use grain and soy for protein instead of meat. That is BAD.
Do you know if you are feeding your pet McDonald’s every day of their life? Do you know that because you might pay more for quality food, you actually feed less. Your pet will eat less. They will not be eating all fillers and potentially cancer causing ingredients? How is their coat? Is it shiny and pretty or dry and flaky? Do they shed excessively? Do they bite at their paws? Scratch a lot? Have bad breath? …it isn’t just “allergies” A lot of it has to do with food.
I challenge you….
